REMNANTS
REMNANTS
The erratic way in which the world of If was conceived resulted in a series of anomalies of different natures. One of the most extraordinary are the manifestations of “remnants”. This is the name given to the immaterial appearances of spectral silhouettes in certain places that do not derive from spiritual presences.
A remnant is not a ghost, undead, or demon, but a poignant psychic fragment of something or someone from the previous universe that remains existing in the present world. They cannot be expelled or fascinated by most clerics and are almost always stuck in “scripts” of repetitive actions that represent a very strong event or emotion that has been imprinted in reality as a psychic fragment.
The fact that the world of If is the result of the fusion of a universe in the process of death with the primordial capsule that gave rise to the present universe meant that “residues” of this past existence remained in ours.
Most of the remnants are not capable of interacting with matter, whether organic or not, and tend to ignore the living beings around them, showing hyper focus on the emotion or activity imprinted on them. There are, however, reports of remnants of psychic energy particularly so intense that they become semi-real, being able to interact with the matter around them (living or not), touching, injuring and destroying, as well as reacting to an interlocutor in a fully conscious way.
Another factor that influences the behavior of the remnants is the emergence of the Wandering Moon. While she is visible in the sky, those who were unable to interact with physical matter suddenly become capable. Others who already possessed this ability become even more powerful. There are still some who go into a kind of psychic frenzy that turns them into threats to anyone who has the misfortune to cross their path.
A remnant can be affected by effects that work against incorporeal beings. If your psychic manifestation is destroyed, it will resurface within 1d10 days, although there are exceptions with longer or shorter respawn times.
